AT some period during one's growth out of material beliefs to a fuller realization of spiritual existence, there may appear conflicting experiences which confuse and depress thought. One may wonder why he does not receive his healing, or why he is faced with some trying experience, or is in some other condition of discord. He may question whether he is at a mental standstill, though he may be earnestly endeavoring to demonstrate his understanding of Christian Science in daily life.
Sometimes a major problem forces one more diligently to seek God. But he need not despair; for if he strives faithfully he will emerge from fear into a higher sense of selfhood, firmer in his understanding of the truth, and better prepared for service to God and man. This is not an unusual experience. And our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, prepares us for this overcoming of error when she says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 254): "If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for through it you win and wear the crown."
The faithful student of Christian Science should not be discouraged at such a state of affairs. He can take hope and be comforted in the knowledge that he is drawing nearer to the divine Principle as material beliefs give way to spiritual understanding, for he is neither retrogressing nor stagnating. With each overcoming he is being prepared to face greater tasks. As he discerns this, he will cease indulging in discouragement, doubt, and fear, and hasten onward. Healing is delayed when one stops to question why he is suffering from any discordant condition, for the truth cannot be ascertained by searching the evidence of the material senses.
