AS we observe the present condition of the world, it is apparent that material methods have failed to bring order out of chaos. There can be little doubt that efforts to adjust world affairs have too frequently been based upon motives that have not been free from selfishness and domination, from ways of thinking that are not straight.
There is, however, a new note of encouragement in the thought of the times; and people in increasing numbers are turning for guidance to a wisdom higher than the human, comprehending, in a greater measure than ever before, that spiritual power is available to lead humanity from the mazes of uncertainty and difficulty entailed by limited, material thinking.
Indicative of this higher hope are the words of the late Poet Laureate of England: "Man is a spiritual being; the proper work of his mind is to interpret the world according to his highest nature, to conquer the material aspects of the world so as to bring them into subjection to the spirit." This is but one of numerous evidences of the spiritual renaissance which promises to counteract the pessimism engendered by the defeatist philosophy of materialism.
