Testimonies of Healing

On page 390 of "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures"...

From the September 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 390 of "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." I am grateful for some understanding of Christian Science, which has enabled me to recognize God, good, as the steadying influence in my life.

In 1933 I lost a good position with a bank, due to its closing. Although I had been a student of Christian Science for many years, this sudden change of events upset me completely. Unemployment at that time seemed to be the problem of many. I went from one business place to another trying to find work, and in most instances I was not even allowed to register, owing to the large waiting list of applicants. I knew only banking, and thought I was unfit for any other employment, but, aided by the kind thoughts of loyal friends and the application of the truth, I began to realize that I could do any task to which I should be led of God. A disturbing thought, however, bound me tightly and doubtless was the cause of my continued unemployment. It was that there were many women working whose financial positions were secure, who were taking places which should have been filled by needy persons like myself and manyothers.

One day while lunching with a fellow church worker, I mentioned my stubborn problem to her. She said that a practitioner had once told her to gaze into the sky on a clear, starry night and see if she noticed one star pushing another aside in order to shine. She assured me that there was room in the commercial world for me as certainly as there was room in the sky for every star. My awakening was instantaneous, and I secured a temporary job the next day. For the next two years or so I was never without employment. The salaries were not large, but always ample. My duties were varied, but through God's graciousness I performed them well. I have since been given an excellent permanent position, with a better salary than I ever earned before.
