"THE SWELLING OF JORDAN"

From the September 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MUCH comfort, encouragement, and inspiration may be gained from the opening verses of the first chapter of Joshua in the light that Christian Science throws upon the Scriptures. A student of Christian Science, suddenly confronted with the necessity of making her own livelihood, gained immeasurable good from pondering this passage, together with the forty-sixth Psalm. Through the years she has obtained added confidence from meditating upon the spiritual truths it contains, whenever any obstacle to progress has loomed large in her path.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has included in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," her textbook on Christian Science, three chapters designated as a "Key to the Scriptures," which set forth interpretations of various verses and key words of the Bible which open rich spiritual meanings of Scriptural passages to the student in search of enlightenment. These interpretations throw much spiritual light upon the story of the exodus.

There it is written that the Israelites, in their journey from Egypt to the promised land, had come to the Jordan River, and were approaching Jericho from the east. They had recently lost their leader, Moses, and were under the new leadership of Joshua, who had been trained by Moses and vested with authority.
