THE four Gospels record healings of blindness by Christ Jesus. Doubtless these healings have brought a measure of consolation and hope to many afflicted ones, although prior to the discovery of Christian Science and the founding of its many activities by Mrs. Eddy, few believed, and still fewer proved, that these and similar healings were possible of present demonstration.
In each of these recorded healings Jesus required some activity on the part of the one healed. Blind Bartimaeus, "casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus." Another was told to go to the pool of Siloam and wash, while two others followed him into the house. Of the latter two he required further proof of their receptivity and faith in the question, "Believe ye that I am able to do this?" and when they acknowledged the power of the Christ to heal, "then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened."
In these healings, studied in the light which Christian Science throws upon the Bible, we can see that Jesus not only restored human sight to those physically blind, but also opened their eyes to behold spiritually the healing Christ, for only through spiritual regeneration can healing come. And so today we, if we would heal or be healed, must rise above materiality; must cast from us the encumbering garments of belief in age, time, mortality, and imperfection; must wash away the blinding clay of belief in a power apart from God. In short, we must follow Christ, Truth, in the way which Mrs. Eddy has made plain.
