"Glorify God in your body, and...

From the March 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's," is the Scriptural passage our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has utilized in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 24), in setting forth the By-Law governing testimonies. It is with an honest desire to obey this admonition, and to take advantage of the opportunity afforded us by our periodicals, that I offer this testimony as an expression of my sincere gratitude for what Christian Science means in my life.

I have experienced the blessed protection and help of Christian Science since infancy. I attended the Sunday school and witnessed glorious proofs of God's power and presence and man's harmonious relationship to Him. When a very small child I was instantaneously healed of influenza through my sudden, clear realization that there was nothing to heal, since God and man are perfect. Diseased tonsils were healed through Christian Science treatment. Other proofs of healing include the overcoming of eczema, warts, glandular poisoning, catarrh, sprained ankle, and broken, collarbones; the rapid mending of a broken wrist; the disappearance of unlovely traits of character; and innumerable instances of protection from various phases of error. I have also witnessed many physical healings and the spiritualization of thought of other members of our family. These healings have come about through our own understanding, or through help from loyal practitioners, for whose work and love I am very grateful.

At the time of entering the university, I left the protection and support of my home, and went to live with a relative who was not a Christian Scientist. From the experiences that followed thereafter, it is evident that I had not yet learned to stand, metaphysically speaking, on my own feet, for I wandered for many months in the wilderness of materiality, with its false pleasures and medical beliefs, seeking relief from a sickness which physicians had failed to diagnose, which others had named migraine headaches, and another had said was a form of hysteria from which I should never be free, but which would rather grow worse as I reached middle age. My whole being was in continual bondage to dread, condemnation, and suffering, and the illness occurred at such intervals as to keep me in bed a great part of the time, causing loss of much weight. It is at this point that I wish to express particular gratitude for the early training in the Sunday school and in the home, because in spite of all these temporary wanderings, there remained with me a definite conviction that the only way I could ever be really and permanently healed was through Christian Science. I knew that Christian Science is God's law.
