DIVINE VERSUS MATERIAL CLAIMS

From the March 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The term "false claim" is commonly used among Christian Scientists. We often hear it said that someone has overcome the false claim from which he had been suffering. What is meant is that in the measure of his understanding he has demonstrated the real man's perfect spiritual being, and that the lying belief of mortal mind, clearly seen as unreal, no longer falsely claims to be a part of his experience.

But sometimes so much emphasis is placed upon this "false claim" that to deluded thinking it seems to exist as a negative reality. If we think that material beliefs have some claims upon us, we should learn that divine Principle, Love, has the only claims on us, which we must know in order to preserve our health and harmony. Our Leader writes (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 16), "The Principle of Christianity is infinite: it is indeed God; and this infinite Principle hath infinite claims on man, and these claims are divine, not human; and man's ability to meet them is from God; for, being His likeness and image, man must reflect the full dominion of Spirit—even its supremacy over sin, sickness, and death."

The spiritual facts, counteracting the material claims that seem to exist in erring human belief, are found in God's "infinite claims on man," which are productive only of good. Are we yielding our belief that material claims can hold us, and letting God's claims on man govern our lives? His claims on man, the perfect spiritual idea, hold man in the eternal bonds of perfection. These spiritual claims are not restrictive, but protective; not limiting, but liberating; not harmful, but blissful. God never placed any claim on His creation that was not purely spiritual, constituting a great blessing.
