DEMONSTRATING TRUE ABILITY

From the August 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To everyone, however much or little he may know, however skillful or unskillful he may be, Christian Science brings the scientific assurance that he is more capable than he has seemed. As Mary Baker Eddy, the greatly beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 89), "We are all capable of more than we do."

The larger capability belonging to everyone arises from the unity of the actual selfhood of everyone with God, infinite Mind, by which each one in reality expresses this Mind without measure. If, therefore, at any time one has done work of superior quality and value, he may know that it was not a phenomenal achievement from which there must be a natural and perhaps permanent reaction, but that it was the appearing in a measure of the unlimited capability that is forever his through his relation to God, and that the reasonable expectation is that more, not less, of this capability should appear for him, through sincere and persistent endeavor in Science.

Similarly, if one has had difficulty in doing anything well, if sufficient skill has seemed always beyond his reach, he may know with deep conviction that ability is not less available for him than for any other; and he can prove step by step through Christian Science, as many before him in such circumstances have done, that this is so. It is wholly clear in Science that Paul's words to Timothy, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth," present a practical program for all men, and that the outcome of such endeavor must be for everyone what was indicated by Christ Jesus when he said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." The outcome for all must be the proof of omnipresent and omnipotent good.
