In the Gospel of Mark there is related the story of a woman who had suffered with an issue of blood twelve years, and had spent all that she possessed, yet continued to grow worse. The narrative goes on to tell us that when the woman heard of Jesus she came in the throng that followed him, intent upon being helped; she felt that if she could but touch his garment she would be restored to health. Her faith was great, and the Master's awareness of her silent call, together with his answer to it, was immediate. In the light that Christian Science throws upon the works of Jesus, it is evident that he knew at all times the truth concerning the perfection of man as the image and likeness of God; and it is further evident that he neither gave credence to nor temporized with disease, sin, or death. Instead, whenever he was confronted with this triad of material beliefs, or any one of them, their arguments were peremptorily dismissed. Hence he healed instantaneously those who sought his aid.
It was due to his spirituality that Christ Jesus was ever alert to feel the needs of those about him. And today it is being proved to us through Christian Science that the spirit of the healing Christ still animates righteous thought. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal heading "Spiritual insight," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (p. 95), "We approach God, or Life, in proportion to our spirituality, our fidelity to Truth and Love; and in that ratio we know all human need and are able to discern the thought of the sick and the sinning for the purpose of healing them." Many Christian Science practitioners express spiritual insight to a marked degree. They follow the Way-shower's example in their awareness of the needs of those who come to them for healing; at the same time they discern the reality of man's spiritual status, and also the unreality of the disease which would bind the patient, so correcting the discord.
Here let us consider an illustration: a director of a symphony orchestra detects a discord because his ear is attuned to harmony, and corrects the discord through a knowledge of the rules governing harmony. In a rehearsal with his musicians, a wise master of music would not keep reiterating, "Listen to that discord," but at once would correct the offending tone. Similarly, Christian Science practitioners, indeed all alert students of Christian Science, detect mortal discord because their thoughts are in accord with spiritual harmony, and they correct the discord through a knowledge of the rules of divine Science. They do not dwell upon the inharmony, but quickly detect and correct any false concept.
