To those who, in the words of Isaiah, are "afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted," Christian Science comes with its wondrous message of healing and salvation. It brings with it the sovereign remedy for sin, disease, discord, and distress. It reveals the one perfect God, and man in His image and likeness, and shows us that now we can have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." It enables us to possess the peace that passes understanding, and to dwell in the kingdom of heaven's harmony right here and now—that heaven which the Master declared to be within our own consciousness. Equipped with some measure of understanding of these blessed truths, the student of Christian Science sets forth to help rescue humanity from the belief and dream of life in matter. He works to help lift up those in distress who seek his aid, to comfort the sorrowing, and to heal sickness and sin. His vision is beyond that which material sense affords, for according to his unfoldment in spiritual understanding is he enabled to see the real man, made in God's likeness.
There are countless ways of helping one's fellow men. Everywhere there are opportunities to help others through the spiritual understanding of God and man. James asks, "If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?" The literal meaning of this admonition is plain; let us consider, therefore, its more spiritual aspect. Those to whom there has not as yet come the spiritual sense of Life as God, are more or less destitute of spiritual food, the heaven-bestowed bread of Truth. These are truly in need of being clothed with the garments of righteousness and praise and purity; they also are needing to be fed, for they are hungering for the spiritual sustenance that alone satisfies the inner cravings of the heart. Here is the opportunity of Christian Scientists to express loving-kindness in their experiences and contacts with the sick and the sinning, wherever may be found receptivity of thought.
In the Manual of The Mother Church Mrs. Eddy writes (Art. VIII, Sect. 1), "In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness." Almost constantly at hand, at one's very door perchance, are those who are hungering and thirsting for the inspiration that the truth alone can give. A Christian Scientist, knowing that the loving Father-Mother God abundantly supplies to all the substance of Spirit, finds the opportunity to declare and realize the truth and with sympathetic understanding and tender affection to offer the cup of cold water in Christ's name and the bread of Truth to these weary and worn wayfarers of earth.
