THE PULLING DOWN OF STRONGHOLDS

From the February 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the first issue of The Journal of Christian Science, on April 14, 1883, Mary Baker Eddy, its Founder and Editor, called this newcomer in the field of journalism "An Independent Family Paper, to Promote Health and Morals;" then at the head of its columns she placed this virile statement of the Apostle Paul: "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds."

Here then is a guiding light for every man, woman, and child enlisted for service in this great Cause. How strengthened, heartened, is the Christian Scientist who is frequently reminded that the truth he declares is indeed "mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds"! Sometimes a young student of Science hesitates to take a case for metaphysical treatment because, he avers, his grasp of the healing truth is as yet feeble, and thus he feels that his mental work has not the power to vanquish error. Such an argument betrays ignorance as to the nature of that priceless spiritual activity called Christian Science treatment.

The student of this Science misses much if he does not frequently read and ponder Mrs. Eddy's clear, graphic instruction in "Rudimental Divine Science," and especially that portion under the caption, "How should I undertake to demonstrate Christian Science in healing the sick?" Hear this crystal-clear statement in the opening paragraph (p. 8): "Be honest, be true to thyself, and true to others; then it follows thou wilt be strong in God, the eternal good. Heal through Truth and Love; there is no other healer." Then on the next page our Leader makes this significant statement: "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." Thus Mrs. Eddy shows us that Christian healing follows the coming of the Christ, Truth, to human consciousness. Truth is the healer, and not a mortal man, strong or weak.
