Among the many great gifts which Mary Baker Eddy has provided are the Christian Science organizations at colleges and universities. Planned especially to meet the needs of young men and women, this gift has far-reaching effects. College students who are being trained for leadership in community, national, and international affairs, will need deep spiritual understanding in addition to the knowledge which a liberal arts education furnishes. Thus equipped for service the Christian Science graduates can go out into the world spreading the spiritual truths of Christianity by effectively serving mankind.
The establishment of these organizations is authorized in Article XXIII, Section 8, of the Manual of The Mother Church: "Members in good standing with The Mother Church, who are members of the faculty, instructors, or students in any university or college, can form and conduct a Christian Science organization at such university or college, provided its rules so permit. Also members in good standing with The Mother Church, who are graduates of said university or college, may become members of the organization by application to, and by the unanimous vote of, the active members present, if the rules of the university or college so permit. When called for, a member of the Board of Lectureship may lecture for said university or college organization."
Those who have had the privilege of being affiliated with such an organization realize the comfort and joy in store for college students through membership. Boys and girls, often away from home for the first time, find at these meetings ways to solve the problems of college life with its many new adjustments. If a room is provided for quiet study of the weekly Lesson or the reading of the periodicals, here is a haven indeed! Quiet relaxation in the realm of spiritual thinking refreshes and equips one for the tasks ahead.
