HOPE

From the September 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our hope is in the spoken Word of God.
Throughout eternity His Word endures.
Unlike men's words, it knows no time renewing,
But ever is, eternal, changeless, true.
Exalted hope lights up the pilgrim's way
Till Love acquits the heart of mean desire,
And abnegated self is clothed in white.
Hope on, pray on, abide in hope and prayer;
Hope lights the signposts on the upward way,
For hope companioned by humility and prayer
Leads on and up to open gates of heaven.
Hope buoys the heart till promise is fulfilled,
Until the rod we hold, when understood,
Becomes the staff of power in the hand.
Then lose not hope, but pray though time be long
And suns sink low and hostile winds arise,
An ever-present help is near, not one
Is left alone to face the mists of earth.
Hope on, pray on, until the risen dawn
Of hope fulfilled shall shine upon your way,
For where you now see darkened vales of mist
Shall shine the light of Love's eternal day.
