HATE HAS NO POWER

From the January 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Does light hate darkness? No, all unaware,
It banishes each shadow. Does truth hate
The lie that it dissolves? It knows it not,
And this unknowing puts the lie to rout,
Removes, erases it from consciousness.

What then is hate? And who is it that hates?
Is it not both the liar and the lie?
Who chants the hymns of hate? Who calls it real?
Not free men, loving freedom. Such men sing
Of truth's swift sword, and wield it as they sing—
Freedom for all, not for some race, some creed;
Freedom to know the eternal rights of man.

Only a slave can hate. His chains may be
Cold iron about his limbs, or what is worse,
False ideologies that bind his thoughts
And blind and poison with the awful lie
That there are two men, and that one can be
Enslaved, and yet the other remain free.
