PROGRESS BY IMPROVEMENT

From the June 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some of you will remember the experience, once printed in the Christian Science Sentinel, of a young woman who had a terrifying dream that recurred in her sleep night after night, and who was finally freed from it through the healing truths of Christian Science.

In this dream the young woman would find herself in a small valley surrounded by mountains with only a narrow trail leading out over a mountain pass. Over this trail and down into the valley, charging at her, would come a herd of wild horses. Frantically she would run before them, but never could she get away from them. She would awaken in a state of great fear and strain. Frequent repetition of the dream produced a serious mental and physical condition.

Then she called on a practitioner of Christian Science for help. The practitioner explained that the dream was a negative conception of material thought from which the true idea of God as divine Mind, and of man as this Mind's expression, conscious only of the thoughts and ideas of this one good Mind, would free her. Treatment was given by the practitioner, but for a time the dream recurred. Then one day the practitioner encouraged the patient, if the dream came again, not to run in terror before the wild horses, but to stand fearlessly, regardless of how threatening the situation might appear.
