DAILY UNITING WITH CHURCH

From the June 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As the members of the Church of Christ, Scientist, which was established by Mary Baker Eddy, strive to further the growth of their church, they may well remember their Leader's words, "We can unite with this church only as we are newborn of Spirit, as we reach the Life which is Truth and the Truth which is Life by bringing forth the fruits of Love,—casting out error and healing the sick" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 35). Every Christian Scientist can each day be "new-born of Spirit," for each day can bring with it fresh resolve and new inspiration.

St. Paul declares (I Cor. 15:31), "I die daily." If one dies daily, daily loses some belief of life in matter, then daily can he resurrected, daily can he be born anew through the spiritualization of thought. This new birth, requisite for membership in the Christian Science church, is the spiritual awakening which comes to each individual as his affections are purified, and he experiences an uplifted desire for the things of Spirit.

Acceptance of the Tenets of The Mother Church constitutes a promise to oneself. To keep faith with the Tenets one must consecrate himself anew each day to their spiritual demands. Joining the Christian Science church, the member works loyally with the Manual, and there finds daily rules to follow, among them "A Rule for Motives and Acts," the "Daily Prayer," and "Alertness to Duty." Each moment of faithful adherence to these daily guides cements his union with Church, which Mrs. Eddy defines in part as "the structure of Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 583). Digressing therefrom he retards his demonstration of the trustworthiness necessary for spiritual union with Church, and defeats the very purpose for which he has joined the church.
