THE simple fact that throughout human history men have increasingly desired, often fought and died for, and progressively gained freedom from political, religious, economic, and social oppression shows that to enlightened thought freedom is regarded as being as basic to man as is life.
Freedom inheres in Mind, God, man's only real Life. How inconceivable it is to think of absolute intelligence, causative Mind, as either conceiving or imposing oppression. God's prophet Isaiah asked (58:6), "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?"
Freedom lives with Truth; oppression coincides with error. The source of all oppression is the godless material mind that, in its blindness to and ignorance of God, would usurp Principle's control over men and nations. It would, through the material will of one or a few, dictate to all, and rob the individual of his God-given right to think, speak, worship, and be governed according to his highest sense of right.
