SCIENTIFIC UNITY: THE LAW OF LOVE

From the November 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE reveals the glorious fact that all reality is united in one supreme and infinite cause and is subject only to the eternal unfoldment of good. This spiritual unity of God and His creation establishes the continuity of all existence and is made manifest through the operation of divine law in human consciousness. The law of one God was measurably perceived by many of the patriarchs and prophets of the older Scriptures and was the foundation of the Jewish church. Its progressive unfoldment was witnessed in the appearing and life of Christ Jesus in fulfillment of prophecy. The Comforter, or final revelation of Christ, Truth, as promised by the Master and portrayed in the vision of St. John in Revelation as an angel in whose hand was a "little book open," is revealed in its complete purity in Christian Science.

God and His reflection, man, are one. In other words, cause and effect are one. This unity is not made up of two things joined together; rather is it the allness of oneness. As a perfect reflection necessarily images its original without change or diminution, so spiritual man completely expresses the perfection, activity, and eternality of God's being. Of this unequivocal oneness of God and His idea, man, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 202), "The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God's will must be universally done."

To do God's will, a right understanding of God's nature is essential. Through divine revelation and spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy defines the complete nature of God in seven interchangeable terms, one of which is Love. Of this term she writes (ibid., p. 140), "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."
