It is high time that I express in writing my gratitude for Christian Science. I have received its blessings since I was twelve years old. The effectual working of Science has healed me of severe sinus headaches, influenza, and heat prostration. Lost valuables have been found, fear has been turned away, and, best of all, this Science has made me begin to understand God's image and likeness, the real man.
Particularly in my work in the Army, Christian Science has unfolded the ever-availability of God's protection against fear and mortal danger. When confusion, indecision, and frustration manifested themselves in myself or others, or when fear screamed so loudly as to drown out everything else, the answer of Christian Science remained, "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword" (Hebr. 4:12), and, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7). My realization of the presence of Mind has enabled me to move behind enemy lines, perform my duties under fire, and make more than the average number of parachute jumps with calmness and a singleness of purpose which I never would have known without the understanding of Science. Mary Baker Eddy has offered to the world the key to the infinite source of inspiration and security. My gratitude to her for the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," increases continually.
Gratitude for the sense of safety I had was expressed by a fellow officer one day in Italy. When we were climbing Mount Summucro we had to take cover for two hours during an artillery barrage. Afterwards, although it was his first experience at the front line of resistance, he said he was not afraid because our commanding officer had told him he would not be hurt while he was with me.
