TRUTH is. The exact truth about God and man, cause and effect, exists. This truth is not an abstraction, but a divine Science with exact and demonstrable laws. True government is inherent in these laws and is to be known and utilized by mankind. With the unfoldment of truth to human consciousness have come better, wiser, more liberating forms of human government, from the Ten Commandments God-given on Mount Sinai to the God-inspired Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Moses is called the great lawgiver because through his enlightened thinking came the ten great spiritual and moral rules or commandments which revealed to mankind a mental government above the material idol worship of that age. The first of these commandments, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"—this "me" being Spirit—is the eternal basis for all true government, and must eventually be seen in its full meaning. In it is to be found the self-maintaining, self-enforcing law of Almighty God.
The moral law defined in the Ten Commandments served to govern the children of Israel, and when obeyed resulted in justice, harmony, and well-being. Great indeed were the pleadings and warnings of the faithful prophets that the hearts and minds of the people might not become darkened by the lure and love of materialism and that they might not resort again to the worship of the golden calf. Through all their wanderings and idolatries there always remained a remnant—seers and prophets to point again to the great law of morality which taught the reward of good and the punishment of evil.
