In the fall of 1888 my mother began having Christian Science treatment from one of Mrs. Eddy's early students. Although my mother did not immediately accept all the teachings of Christian Science, yet the beneficial effect of the treatment was soon manifested in fundamental changes in her mode of thinking. She was lifted from years of invalidism to the ability, after the passing on of my father, to support and educate her three children. Eventually she became an earnest, loyal student of Science and an active member of a branch church.
As a child I read occasional passages in my mother's copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and accepted accounts of Christian Science healing. However, not until college days were past, followed by a year of ill-health from sewer gas poisoning, was I ready to seek my own healing in Science. In rapid succession came spiritual awakening, wholehearted acceptance of Christian Science, membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church—and within a few months I was restored to abounding health and strength.
Several more years of business experience followed, then marriage, and the bearing and rearing of a family of four children. During those busy years Science was my unfailing help. Our children passed through many of the vicissitudes which mortal mind would fasten upon childhood, but Truth was always proved victorious over the lies of illness and accident. I am positive that all four owe their lives to the healing power of Christian Science. I am equally sure that the many healings they experienced, often with the help of a practitioner and many times as the result of their own understanding, were the steps that led all four to be the loyal working students of Science that they are today. They are now bringing up their children to know and use and prove the Christ, Truth, in their daily living.
