About eight years ago I was suffering from chronic constipation to such an extent that I went to doctors to be examined and X-rayed to see if there was any possible way to get relief. Their diagnosis was that I had adhesions from a former appendectomy, and an operation to remedy those would help some but would not entirely heal the situation.
I had attended two or three lectures on Christian Science. Although I thought myself very prejudiced toward Science, perhaps something of what I had heard at the lectures was at work in my consciousness, because I felt a great reluctance to undergo this operation.
One Saturday morning, when the usual remedies I had been employing had ceased to have any effect whatsoever for two days, and I was in despair, I decided to try Christian Science. When I went to the home of the relative who had taken us to the lectures and asked her if she thought I could heal myself, she replied promptly, "You can't, but God can heal you."
