THE LORD'S PRAYER

From the April 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Lord's Prayer, as found in the sixth chapter of Matthew's Gospel, is one of the strongest statements of truth in the Holy Scriptures, and when spiritually understood it is a specific treatment for all the ills of the world today. It is a direct refutation of the pretenses of error which have been voiced to the world by the enemies of democracy.

This prayer, used in daily metaphysical work by Christian Scientists, together with its spiritual interpretation as given in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 16, 17), constitutes perhaps the most powerful statement of truth that can be brought to bear against aggressive mental suggestion. It is a shield and buckler against the evil that would disrupt efforts to bring about lasting world peace. Being an undiluted and unadulterated statement of truth, it is invincible, and the truths it contains, when realized and understood, destroy the most subtle attacks and cunning contentions of error to turn peace into discord.

The Lord's Prayer, scientifically understood, renders powerless any pretense of potency that opposes itself to God. It nullifies any claim of the superiority of evil, disarms unrighteousness, and overthrows the strongholds of evil. Formerly the Lord's Prayer was considered entirely a petition, but Mrs. Eddy has shown it to be also a statement of spiritual fact, an affirmation of the truth which saves and heals. Christian Scientists can find no better introduction and benediction to their healing work.
