"A VERY PRESENT HELP"

From the September 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sooner or later everyone must learn that the only infallible helper is God, eternal Mind, and that whatever one's experience or need may seem to be, Mind has already supplied that need. The day must dawn when it will be universally understood that God's help is ever present and far beyond anything that we can hope to receive from any human person or influence, because human influence is always limited and restricted, whilst God, good, is measureless divine Mind and never makes a mistake.

Someone may ask, How is it possible to expect the dawning of the universal understanding of God as an ever-present help while wrong, cruelty, greed, so many kinds of evil, are rampant in the world? Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, gives a practical answer to this question in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She says (p. 233): "In the midst of imperfection, perfection is seen and acknowledged only by degrees. The ages must slowly work up to perfection. How long it must be before we arrive at the demonstration of scientific being, no man knoweth,—not even 'the Son but the Father;' but the false claim of error continues its delusions until the goal of goodness is assiduously earned and won."

It is heartening to know that through the earnest study of the inspired writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, individual striving for "the goal of goodness" and its demonstration has begun. Faithful, consistent study of her textbook in connection with the Bible is resulting in the recognition of man's oneness with God, good, and the demonstration of this fact. Proportionately as the alert student of Christian Science reaches out for the understanding of scientific being, the spiritual sense of Love is recognized and he finds that he is better able to overcome the erroneous thoughts which produce sin, disease, and death. More and more he discerns man's spiritual selfhood to be Godlike, or the reflection of God's nature, never to be found in matter or in a material body.
