When Joshua addressed the tribes of Israel at Shechem, admonishing them to serve God in sincerity and in truth, he said (Josh. 24:15), "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." What a wonderful decision he made! But the Israelites, like many of us today, did not grasp the spiritual significance of such an admonition and decision.
Christian Science teaches us that God is All-in-all, the one Principle, cause and creator of all good, and that man, His effect or spiritual reflection, is coexistent and eternal with Him. Because God is one infinite Spirit, Mind, Life, Truth, Love, man is the limitless, unchangeable expression of spiritual perfection and completeness; he has a selfhood which is sustained and protected by divine Love; he can bear witness only to the truth.
Whatever we are acknowledging as real in our thinking is apt to be made manifest in our experience; our thoughts determine our outlook, environment, accomplishment, and activity. So why do we not decide today to serve God, the one Mind, instead of elevating evil to supposed power by serving the unintelligent gods of fear, doubt, lust, and so on, which are the opposites of God? There can be no halfway position. Christ Jesus said (Matt. 6:24), "No man can serve two masters."
