The law of Moses, or the Ten Commandments, found in the twentieth chapter of Exodus, sets forth God's demands for absolute obedience to Him and the moral code for human conduct. In the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reveals the blessings and rewards that come to those who are receptive to the demands of Love and to those who are striving to fulfill them. We gain Love's blessings described in the Beatitudes by fulfilling the law of obedience voiced in the Commandments.
It has been rightly said that when the first four commandments concerning God are obeyed, the remaining six relating to man's loving consideration of his brother will naturally be followed. The first and most important point for spiritual growth, namely, that one shall love God with all his heart, was taught by both Moses and Christ Jesus. Christian Science reiterates the fundamental law of Holy Writ that mankind must fulfill God's demands in order to obtain His blessings. Thus Mary Baker Eddy, writing on page 183 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," states: "Divine Mind rightly demands man's entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty. Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power."
These words of Mrs. Eddy, "No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty," strike the keynote of the second commandment. This commandment reads, in part, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them."
