ESSENTIALS OF CHRISTIAN FAITH

From the November 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every religious belief must be based on a conception of God. The Bible reveals men's altering conception of the nature of Deity and their relationship to Him. It also shows that as people's belief about Deity becomes less material and less human, so their conception of God becomes proportionately more an idea of infinite Spirit and of eternal goodness. He is discerned as everlasting Life, the sole creative intelligence, or cause, of the universe, infinite, supreme, almighty.

God revealed Himself to Moses on Horeb as I AM, the only reality. God gradually became understood as Spirit, Life, Truth, Love. In the New Testament God's omnipotence was emphasized by Christ Jesus' saying (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing." He attributed all power to God.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy gives the following summary of the nature of God (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Together these synonyms for God convey an idea which satisfies Mosaic tradition, affirms Christian gospel, and is logical.
