Poems

A Lad of Galilee

From the February 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How late you are in coming, little son;
See how the shadows lengthen in the street.
Where have you been?
All day, my mother, I was with the Master.
Not him they call Christ Jesus!
Yes, Christ Jesus. Early in the day
I found him preaching by the road.
I pushed right to his side, and there I stood.
And is he handsome like young James, the tanner's son?
And does he stand erect with Caesar's pride?
Tell me—what does he look like?
I don't remember. I only know he loves me.
He loves you? Did he say that, little son?
No, but I knew. He did not need to say it.
Then, when he saw me there, he drew me close
And said, "Of such is the kingdom of heaven."
Beloved one, how fair must heaven be!
When all the people went away, we walked along,
My hand in his, out toward the shining sea.
And did he work a miracle, perchance?
Or heal the blind, or bring the dead to life?
One hears such tales. And were you not afraid?
Afraid? How could I be? He loves me!
There is not anything he doesn't love—
The plants and trees and birds, the people everywhere.
He said it is the greatest strength of all,
Because our God Himself is Love.
I've heard it whispered how one stormy night
He walked upon the waves and stilled the storm.
Did he, perhaps, tell that?
No, not a word about himself,
But only what the Father does.
He said that those who love the Father's will,
And do it, cannot come to harm or death.
My son, what is the Father's will?
How can He know or care where each one is,
Or if he sings or sighs?
The Master said the Father knows each one;
And loves each one, and watches over all.
Such little, easy words he used.
Why, anyone could tell he spoke the truth!
Oh, to believe his words, my son!
Then, when the day was growing dim, he sent me home.
But soon—tomorrow!—I must go again.
He promised he would teach me more of love.
