I am grateful for the gift of Christian Science given us by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health and her other writings, for her founding of the Church and for the Church Manual she provides for its government. It was indeed a gift to me, for my birth certificate was signed by a Christian Science practitioner, and I attended the Sunday School when both the Sunday School and I were in our infancy. I am thankful for the absolute truth taught me there and am glad to say that daily I realize more fully the protection and direction I have received from the simple facts of Science. The steadfast acknowledgment of God's goodness which based my understanding assured my progress and assures increasing satisfaction in progressive spiritual understanding.
I have witnessed many proofs of the present power of God to heal, protect, provide, save, and bless in every way. I have myself experienced many healings of minor illnesses and results of accidents, including broken bones. The latter case occurred when I was attending college and fell, breaking the bones in my right hand. I was accompanied by my roommate, who was also a pupil in the Sunday School. When we returned to the house, the suggestion that a doctor be called immediately was met by a quick, firm statement by my roommate that this was not needed because I was a Christian Scientist.
I am unable to tell of any specific declarations of truth made to meet this problem, but I am quite certain that neither of us was the least alarmed, knowing that God was Love, that we were His children, and that He would heal me. I am not sure when the healing took place; I only know that we covered my hand with a large handkerchief and went about our business of getting ready for a freshman party that evening. Many years later, during a required physical examination, it was determined that the bones had been broken in several places. For this demonstration of the substantial healing power of complete faith in God, taught in our Sunday Schools, I am especially thankful.
