Christian Science was presented to me at a time when I was lonely, unhappy, discouraged, and in much pain from inflammatory rheumatism. It took some time for me to overcome prejudice against what I thought this Science stood for. I had become a member of an orthodox church when very young and had much to unlearn when becoming a student of Science. Through the loving and patient help of a Christian Science practitioner the healing came, and life took on a much happier and brighter outlook.
I was a young student of Science when I was sent overseas for service with the armed forces in Italy in the First World War. Before I sailed, this practitioner explained to me how I could use the ninety-first Psalm as complete protection, whatever condition arose. Immediately after we sailed from a Canadian port, I found that each verse of this Psalm did meet a particular need. We were in a severe three-day storm, and when it was over we found that our ship was lost from the convoy, the engines were disabled, the radio did not work, there was much illness on board, and we were in the so-called active submarine belt. Through this whole experience I was free from fear through constant study and application of the promises in this Psalm. Our trip took twenty-one days, and when we finally reached an English port, we were told that had we not been heard from on that day we would have been reported as lost. During all my stay in foreign countries I was wonderfully protected, and freedom from fear was mine.
Through the years I have been healed of many difficulties—sprains and broken bones caused from falls, a severe case of poisoning caused from bee stings which almost covered my body, the need for the use of glasses, recurrent attacks of tonsillitis, and many other so-called diseases. In many instances a home and a position have been found by my relying understandingly on the truth in the verse in Exodus (23 : 20), "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared." It was not always easy to silence mortal mind's claim of overcrowded conditions and of the law of age when I was applying for a position. I found, however, that when I stopped human outlining and would listen for God's direction and expect this guidance, then results would come.
