In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes the following arresting statement (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,— neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love."
In the marginal heading to the paragraph from which this passage is taken Mrs. Eddy clearly indicates that she is speaking of a spiritualized consciousness. Since the immediate results of a single moment of such a state of consciousness are such as she declares them to be, how unspeakably wonderful must be the immediate effects were that spiritualized consciousness to be maintained constantly.
Surely this was the Mind that was in Christ Jesus! It was his dwelling consciously in this kingdom of God that enabled the master Christian to meet and overcome the many and varied forms of sin, disease, and death with which he was called upon to deal. The raging storm was stilled and tranquillity established in a moment of time before the wondering eyes of those who beheld it. In a single moment Jesus healed leprosy, epilepsy, hemorrhage, fever, blindness, lameness, deafness, dumbness, and death! These were some of his mighty works; these were some of the signs following which indicated clearly that Jesus possessed constantly that perfect consciousness which is cognizant only of the things, the thoughts, of God.
