Although I was not attracted to Christian Science because of the need for any physical healing, for many years it has been my only physician, as the study of the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, has revealed to me that this Science is a way of life adequate to meet every need. I became interested in the first place because of the happy, harmonious lives of several dear friends who were students. They seemed to have an understanding which influenced every detail of their lives, and whatever they did seemed to bring satisfaction and success. I know now that these friends were true exponents of Christian Science. Later on, when I was pioneering on the desert and was confronted with many problems, such as those of lack and too great concern about the effects of wind, weather, and markets on our crops, I recalled the serenity of the lives of these friends who were students of spiritual things and seemed to give little consideration to material things.
At that time I was a member of an orthodox church and working faithfully in it, according to my light. I realized, however, that my church was not meeting my needs, so I began the study of Science and Health. It was indeed the turning point in my experience, for even though all problems did not melt away at once, it is true that as my understanding of God and man increased, I was able to meet and master many problems, and above all I learned to stand firm, knowing I was on the right track. That gave me supreme satisfaction.
A test came soon afterward in the illness of my young daughter. She was stricken with infantile paralysis. I knew then the course I should take in dealing with this physical problem, and through the aid of a practitioner she was completely healed, with no aftereffects.
