I became interested in Christian Science through a neighbor who held a Sunday School class in her home. I was allowed to attend, as my mother had been healed by this Science some years before and it was regarded highly by the family. I had no prejudices to overcome, but as time went on I began to feel that Christian Scientists spoke too often of Mrs. Eddy. This feeling persisted for some years, until I was married and had two sons.
One night when I had put the boys to bed they were coughing so hard they could not rest. After a while I thought, "I must put another comforter on them." On my way to their room I was arrested by the thought that Christian Science is the only Comforter. I found myself back in the living room with the book "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait," by Dr. Lyman P. Powell, in my hands. I was reading on page 155, "Anyone with the least understanding of God does not cough." I thought, "Oh! is that so?" Then, "Why, yes, it is so, because Mrs. Eddy said it." The boys ceased to cough as I admitted this.
Since that time many healings have come when I have declared some truth given us by Mrs. Eddy. One day my older son smashed his fingers. He was in much pain as I declared aloud, "There is no sensation in matter, because there is no matter." Not another tear fell, and he said, "Why, it doesn't hurt a bit." Then he added, "Boy, I'm glad we're Christian Scientists," and he ran outdoors to play.
