For all the proofs of God's care I have had I am grateful. My mother became interested in Christian Science when I was very small, and I had the blessing of attending Sunday School from that early age. During later school years I was healed to a great extent of much fear, self-pity, and selfcondemnation, which I tended to blame on everybody in general. These healings came after I was put in the class of a devout, happy Sunday School teacher.
I know that without Christian Science I should never have been able to enter the Army, and without it I should never have returned. As the months went by overseas, the joy and good health I expressed became very noticeable, even conspicuous, to those around me and were often commented on with wonder. Through this I learned to have more compassion for those who seemed to be less fortunate, also, because of possible bitterness and resentment, to be as wise as a serpent, and harmless as a dove.
In answer to one member of our outfit who asked how I managed not to drink, swear, or smoke, I held up a Christian Science Sentinel which I was reading and said, "This is the answer!"
