Testimonies of Healing

I am grateful beyond words that Christian Science...

From the April 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am grateful beyond words that Christian Science has taught me to reverse the testimony of mortal sense; that it has led me to explore the spiritual realm of reality. I am also grateful for my Spartan childhood training, which helped me to catch the vision of the necessity for self-discipline and obedience as did our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. My church had not given me an understanding of God, and I searched philosophy and great teachers of the past for glimpses of Truth. Christian Science has given me the true idea with which to work.

When my first child was two years old, she contracted scarlet fever, which produced an abscess on the leg. When I refused to have the child submitted to extremely painful treatment, I was warned by the doctor that serious trouble would follow. At this time a visitor, a Christian Scientist, asked me if I would like to have Christian Science treatment. This was my introduction to Science. I was skeptical, but consented to have treatment, and the leg was healed.

Thereupon I read the textbook. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and knew from the first chapter, on Prayer, that I had at last found the truth. The rest of the book I did not understand, but I was happy and satisfied, having attained a full conviction after attending my first Christian Science lecture. I knew then that a tremendous message was being given to the world. From that moment I have never looked back. And throughout an exceptionally full and busy life, Christian Science has met my every need.

I did not grasp how Science actually heals until my two children had whooping cough at an early age. This terrified me, and in my anguish I cried out to God to show me that the truths stated in the textbook did heal. After that I felt remarkably calm and read Science and Health to the children until they quietly slept. The following morning they awoke minus any cough. This experience inspired me with a deep and sure sense of gratitude. Mumps, colds, influenza, pneumonia, dislocated joints, and two cases of broken bones have all been healed.

Christian Science has given infallible guidance in all the activities of my public life—including the necessary inspiration for public speaking and the capacity to organize a great variety of human activities—which has meant living under the heavy pressure of incessant occupation. All the claims of mortal beliefs were overcome, so that I was given the strength and intelligence necessary to meet the heavy demand made on me.

For many inspiring friendships and for the true comradeship of my husband and two daughters, I am grateful. For the comfort, strength, and calm support of divine Love when my husband passed on, I am grateful. For the privilege of being able to serve under The Mother Church Wartime Activities in the London Depot and see the heart-warming results of that all-embracing expression of divine Love, I am deeply grateful.

In the loneliness of the battle of bombs over London, I really found God to be my strong companion and a support that never failed me. Throughout the unpleasant trials of the blackout, He was ever the light that guided me safely home.

God grant that I may ever be found worthy of the name Christian Scientist.— ,.
