GOD'S LAW, THE DIVINE ORDER

From the November 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because Christian Science is the law of God, it needs to be understood and practiced as law. Furthermore, divine law needs to be understood in its fundamental meaning as the will of God manifested in an ordered universe, if the healing power of Christian Science is to be demonstrated.

The revelation of the Ten Commandments to Moses was a recognition of God's great dispensation of law to men, but it was not the first manifestation of His law through human agencies. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and others had already expressed some measure of obedience to the divine law of good which man, God's image, embodies. The Commandments were given in accord with wisdom as human regulations designed to restrain and annul contradictions of the order of real existence by those insubordinate to God's will. In the divine order, God is supreme Mind and man is His obedient idea, obedient not by choice, but by the necessity which makes ideas subservient to the Mind whose very knowing gives them being and whose will is the law of their life.

In the order of heaven, which Christian Science demonstrates by revealing it, God is the creative Principle of all that actually is. His mandate is that the highest good be manifested; and thus the arrangement of His ideas, not only in their inseparable relation to Him, but in their relation to each other and in their combinations of activity, becomes the true order of His realm. There perfection is the changeless fact of the universe. Mary Baker Eddy defines the divine order as spiritual law in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says (pp. 470, 471), "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history."
