MEASURING MANKIND

From the November 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The sense of well-being which flows from a consciousness of happy, cordial, and co-operative human relationships is a priceless possession. Not all have attained this goal of peace and good will. Yet all men and women of reasoning capacity will agree that few things in this human experience are more desirable. Where discord, lack of understanding, and contention seem to prevail, mental doors are wide open for the entrance of a host of undesirable guests. To keep these doors closed against such intruders is of major importance.

The truth of God and man as revealed in Christian Science has helped many mortals in an ever-increasing stream to keep these doors at least partially and sometimes entirely closed. It would be difficult indeed to estimate their number. Many a troubled man or woman has experienced deep distress as a result of his mistaken personal sense of another. Perhaps some even have been made ill as a result of their annoyance over the acts or attitudes of others.

To all such, Christian Science submits a practical method whereby freedom from this sort of mental bondage may be attained. To these it says substantially: "If you are genuinely desirous of joining those who have reached this happier state of thinking and living, you have taken the first and most essential step. Sincere and honest desire is always prayer, and prayer in a most effective form." Any prayer that shuts out self and reaches out to God, the divine source, for light and guidance is answered.
