GIVING THE DIVINE MESSAGE

From the November 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Several years ago in a conversation with a Christian Scientist, the writer received the thought that when one gives a testimony of healing in the Wednesday meeting of a Church of Christ, Scientist, he is giving a message of Truth and Love to mankind. On many occasions since that time he has been aided in his decision to give a testimony by the thought that he had this message to give. He has seen also that all those who speak God's Word and live under divine direction are the messengers of divinity to the world.

Through the example of his unity with the Father and his closeness to humanity Christ Jesus proved himself the messenger of Truth to the world throughout all time. His declaration that the Father was in him and he in the Father indicated that the Christ, which he embodied, was the message of divine Truth to mankind. This declaration conveyed his supreme desire to have all men realize man's divine nature and to see the spiritual identity, the Son of God, which he knew in reality constituted his only being.

The Saviour of mankind did not present himself as a vicarious atonement whereby without effort one might attain heaven. He strove not only to have his followers recognize him as the Son of God, or the Christ, but also to have them recognize their own spiritual, eternal selfhood, and thus do the works that he did. Identity with the one Mind, God, makes the Christ, which Jesus expressed, the perfect message to humanity of the goodness and love of God, an inspiring proof that it is possible for every individual to demonstrate his spiritual identity with God. Christ Jesus' declarations, "I and my Father are one," and, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven" (John 10:30; 6:51), indicate the inherent perfection of the universal healing power of the Christ.
