I have had many proofs of God's protecting and sustaining power and of the Bible promise (Prov. 3:6), "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
In the Second World War, I enlisted with the Seabee branch of the Navy. The major portion of my enlistment was spent in the tropics. During this time I experienced divine protection, and with one exception I lost no time from my duties.
This time I was suddenly stricken with a high fever, and the medical officer ordered me to sick bay. I was offered some medicine, but asked to be excused from taking it, saying that I felt I could handle the situation in my own way. My wishes were respected, and I was not offered any further medication. For several days I did not seem to make any progress, although I read the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly and as much more as I felt able to. On Saturday the thought came to me that I should be at my post as First Reader at our Sunday Christian Science church service. This, however, looked like a difficult task at the time.
