Thousands of individuals today are questioning the validity of material methods, which they realize have not solved humanity's problems. For centuries reformers and philanthropists have endeavored to alleviate human suffering through material methods. Today the world seems thronged with new inventions, the far-reaching effect of which it can scarcely comprehend. Looking around, however, one still sees the same kind of human bondage—homelessness, want, war, division of nations, and myriad other phases of evil. Earth-bound footsteps are becoming heavier as the realization dawns that there is neither rest, nor release, nor freedom through dependence on or homage to materialism. Multitudes, therefore, are seeking a way out of the wilderness of human beliefs.
When the great Master, Christ Jesus, said plainly that he was the way, he meant not his material personality, but his preaching and practice of the Christ, Truth. His purity and deep understanding of God enabled him to teach his followers that God is Spirit and that Spirit's reflection is man. He spoke of an unchallenged, unchanging kingdom-not distant, but at hand—yes, even within the pure consciousness of man. Discerning God's law, he made no concessions to matter, but healed sick and sinning mortals through spiritual means alone. Moving steadily on, he let the experiences along the way be opportunities to prove God's allness. He moved among men as M aster and Way-shower. His teachings purified human lives, unlocked hardened hearts, and destroyed material beliefs which acted as shutters to keep out the light.
Centuries ago that great character, the Apostle Paul, also pointed the way out of materialism with its empty promises. His cry to the Romans still stands (12:2): "Be ye transformed." How:' "By the renewing of your mind."
