SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION

From the May 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us (p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." That which is called one's human experience at any given moment is but the expression of the present state of his human consciousness. If human consciousness is filled with fear, resentment, superstitious beliefs, and other errors of material sense—all the result of human ignorance of God—human experience will express these false beliefs as human discord, inharmony, disease, lack, and other erroneous manifestations. But if human consciousness is filled with the understanding of the truth of being, the spiritual understanding of the true nature of God and of man as His beloved child, such understanding will find manifestation in a harmonious, happy, and health-filled human experience.

Jesus' demonstration of the Christ, which reveals the truth concerning God and man, found its manifestation in his experience. This Christ, Truth, so fully exemplified by Christ Jesus, has been revealed to us by Mrs. Eddy through Christian Science. As we individually grow in the spiritual understanding of this scientific revelation of the truth of being, the truth of God and His creation, man and the universe, we too begin to enjoy a more harmonious experience. The Christ, which our textbook defines as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error" (p. 583), makes each one who welcomes it a better man or a better woman.

The thought of Christian Scientists is filled with gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her God-revealed discovery of Christian Science. This scientific truth, revealing the true idea of God and of man, came to her in an hour of great need, bringing about her immediate restoration to health from the effects of an injury pronounced fatal by the attending physician. As she patiently persisted in her scientific search of the Scriptures, the revelation of Truth continued to unfold to her understanding, and with this unfoldment came the gradual transformation of her human experience from one filled with sickness, loneliness, friendlessness, homelessness, lack, limitation, and human misery to one filled with health, happiness, and well-being.
