SUPPLY, SPIRITUAL AND INFINITE

From the May 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christian Scientist has accepted, according to the measure of his understanding the fact that life is spiritual, which means, in effect, that all the experiences of real existence are in divine consciousness, or Mind. This is a perfectly reasonable proposition, but it runs counter to the general opinions of the world's unenlightened thought. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, realized, with great clarity, the truths which underlay the teachings of Jesus. That she also recognized the implications of them was abundantly proved in her ability to heal the sick on the lines which he laid down. Our Leader's understanding of spiritual law has been enunciated in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and thus the same healing truths which she demonstrated have been made available to all.

A primal or basic fact, as learned in Christian Science, is that God is the only cause and that God is Mind. The entire universe, therefore, must be and is a realm of ideas included in the divine consciousness. W hat then is the place of you and me in this state where Mind is All? The universe of Mind is peopled with spiritual ideas, and Mrs. Eddy says of them (Science and Health, p. 503): "These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God." So man coexists with his creator and includes by reflection the universe known by God. Since this universe is a subjective state of divine Mind, man has dominion over it by virtue of the fact that he expresses the Mind which is God.

These are the truths which the Master perceived and proved by his complete dominion over all so-called material conditions. Christian Scientists are grateful to Mrs. Eddy because she has shown them what Jesus actually meant and how they may express the same spiritual dominion over untoward circumstances that he did. John, the beloved disciple, perceived that consciousness was one and infinite. In Revelation he wrote (3:8), "I [God] have set before thee an open door," symbolically describing the unlimited nature of conscious being and its unfoldment. Our Leader describes man's nature in this striking passage in the Christian Science textbook (p. 258): "God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis." This statement clearly indicates that man is eternally revealing the infinite completeness of Mind's creation, in which God has already done all things well.
