In our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, there are two statements that I shall never forget. One is on page 394: "We should remember that Life is God, and that God is omnipotent;" and the other is on page 496, where we read, "We all must learn that Life is God." A verse in the Bible also means much to me (Ps. 118:17): "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." I know that these statements are true because I have been able to prove them to a certain degree in my own life.
In the Second World War, I was in the infantry and served in the European theater of action. Before I was sent to Europe, a Christian Scientist, who realized that one has to be mentally alert and not accept the testimony of the material senses, said to me, "If you refuse to lose consciousness, you can never pass on." It was also pointed out to me that I must be conscious of perfect God and perfect man.
Early one morning in the war zone, our observation post, which was located on a hill on the outskirts of the city, sent us a signal that the enemy was starting a counterattack or getting ready for some kind of action. We were ordered to "open fire with flares and regular mortar shells." We were about two hundred yards from the first enemy foxholes.
