SAFETY IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

From the September 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Throughout the pages of the Bible we read of the absolute necessity for righteousness. Those who seek salvation from sin, fear, disease, and death must turn from evil and seek, cherish, and practice righteousness. This is the Bible teaching. Numerous proofs are given in the Scriptures of the safety of the righteous and the disastrous effects of sin and its inevitable and total destruction. We may recall the account of Noah, who escaped the flood; of Lot and his family fleeing from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and of Moses, who through prayer defeated the rebellion of Korah.

The call to righteousness is not old-fashioned or outmoded. It is a divine adventure, thrilling, inspiring, and new. There was never a greater need for righteousness than there is today; indeed, it is essential for the survival of the race. Christian Science sounds a trumpet call on the battlefields of thought, urging mortals to recognize and faithfully practice the great truths that are taught in the Scriptures and expounded in Christian Science. It urges us to greater consecration to the things of the Spirit and impels us to bring forth fruits with signs following.

Love for God and man is the incentive with which we work. Mary Baker Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 292): "What cannot love and righteousness achieve for the race? All that can be accomplished, and more than history has yet recorded."
