DEVELOPMENT THROUGH DIVINE LAW

From the September 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Man is God's idea, whose history is spiritual progress. The history of mankind, however, is a dualistic record of spiritual truths unfolding and of human benefits and destructive mistakes. At every moment history is in the making. Therefore every hour is an hour of development. What sort of development shall it be?

Man's development is in consonance with divine law and is the unfoldment of spiritual completeness. Divine law, expressing the constant and harmonious relation between God and His idea, man, produces the brotherhood of man and man's unity with spiritual power. Cynicism may scoff, agnosticism disagree, and atheism ignore, but all the isms in the world cannot change the immutable fact that God's law constitutes the very nature of man's being. He lives by it and because of it. Mankind's hope for peace and true security lies in the demonstration of the universal law of Spirit, the government of divine Love.

Mary Baker Eddy on page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science," in answer to the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" replies, "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Moses, that venerable patriarch of Biblical times, was a leader whose name has lived down through the ages as a lawgiver by reason of his reception of the Ten Commandments. Christ Jesus, the Master and Way-shower, said of himself that he had not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it.
