"HOW MUCH DOES HE WEIGH?"

From the September 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Among the multifold limitations imposed upon the thinking of mortals by mortal mind is that of weight, which in one dictionary is defined as "the force with which a body is attracted toward the earth." What a contrast to this false concept of substance and its earth-binding laws is the law of spiritual attraction, which uplifts consciousness, unfolds each holy purpose and desire, and guides every good thought to God.

The education of mankind has largely been from the basis that matter is substance, occupying space and possessing weight. From this material premise the health and well-being of the human family have been believed to be dependent upon matter and its so-called material laws and at the mercy of them. Mortal mind believes that matter possesses life and vitality; it also accepts the belief that every action has a reaction. It couples strength and weakness, health and sickness, joy and sorrow, holiness and impurity. And yet the Apostle James queried (3:11), "Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?"

Weariness and loss of strength, like all incapacity of the body, are the falsities of the dream of life in matter and not the products of divine Mind. Nerves and muscles, being non-intelligent, cannot possibly suffer from overwork or accident. The resources of the real and ideal man are spiritual and never environed in material cells and tissue; therefore they cannot be overtaxed, worn out, or rendered inactive. God-given health and strength are not subject to the weight of the body or to so-called man-made laws, for immortal man can never be separated from God, the only cause. God's man is the immortal evidence of God's infinite goodness and power, and he lives to glorify divine Principle.
