OBEDIENCE IS NATURAL TO MAN

From the September 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some months ago, when gratefully reviewing the wealth of healings and blessings resulting from his study of Christian Science, the writer reasoned that at last he must be learning fairly well the lessons of obedience which are necessary to spiritual enlightenment and unfoldment. It was not long, however, before this conclusion was seriously upset. A situation developed in his business that required the payment of a large sum of money to his company for a purchase which had been made by one of his clients. In a talk with this client a few weeks before the money was due he found that there was no prospect of the payment being made.

Faced with what seemed an acute and difficult situation, but obedient to his highest understanding of Christian Science, he sought divine guidance. He reasoned that in the allness of divine Spirit there was ample supply and substance for every rightful need. He saw that since the obligations involved had been incurred fairly and honestly, he would be protected. He understood man to be the idea of divine Principle, ever governed by divine law. He declared that the mesmerism of fear had neither presence nor power in the universe of Love, where man eternally lives, and therefore it could have no influence whatever in this situation. But with all this knowing of the truth, the peace which usually attends such prayer seemed to be withheld.

In a second talk with the client he took a thirty-day note in lieu of cash in the belief that it would be readily accepted by the company. However, the company rejected the note on the ground that it was contrary to collection rules. Rebellion against this decision and intense fear and confusion seemed overwhelming to the writer. After several nights of sleepless prayer there came a beautiful, healing revelation.
