GOD REQUIRES ECONOMY

From the September 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God, our heavenly Father, forms the character and determines the course of action of His children. He lovingly demands obedience to divine requirements as the natural fulfillment of law and order.

Article XXIV, Section 5. in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy is entitled "God's Requirement." It reads, "God requires wisdom, economy, and brotherly love to characterize all the proceedings of the members of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist." It is well to give careful consideration to the word economy. Today it holds the attention not only of the businessman and the housewife, but also of the student in the classroom. While the term generally refers to the proper administration of the expenditure of money, it may also be considered from the standpoint of the expenditure of time, effort, or thought. But is not its true meaning to be found in the wise husbanding of our God-given resources?

Human economy is subject to restricted and limited action. The divine economy is unlimited in its active goodness. As reason directs thought along Christianly scientific lines, it becomes evident that the divine order operates universally, with no preferential treatment in its wise distribution of undiminished affluence. Human economy is largely ruled and its status determined by the balance maintained by its two factors supply and demand. Under divine management, these are permanently stabilized. At every point supply coincides with demand.
