Five years ago I was taken suddenly ill with a nervous breakdown complicated by-heart trouble and high blood pressure. I was very weak and was confined to bed. At the recommendation of my wife, treatment was requested of a Christian Science practitioner, through whose help I was quickly healed. Within three weeks I made a business trip to the East Coast and back with no ill effects.
After this experience I desired to join The Mother Church and a branch church. Until this time I had felt that I was not ready for the step, but in gratitude for my beautiful healing I heeded the words of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3), "Action expresses more gratitude than speech." I am very grateful for the growth and understanding which have come to me through this experience and for the loving practitioners who have helped me at different times.
Shortly thereafter I was led to give up my position as a buyer for a large department store, a position I had held for sixteen years. With prayerful thought and again with the help of a practitioner I started a business of my own, working out each step of the way through the unfoldment of divine Mind. This new business was a complete departure from anything I had done previously, and I was beset with many problems, but they were quickly met through the realization that "trials are proofs of God's care" (ibid., p. 66) and through my heeding the following verses from the Bible (Prov. 3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Each successive step has given me a better understanding of Christian Science. Almost from the start of this business my earnings have increased greatly, and I have had more harmonious working conditions.
