Testimonies of Healing

I took up the study of Christian Science...

From the February 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I took up the study of Christian Science a number of years ago when one who was very near and dear to me decided to turn to it for physical healing, having become discouraged while under the treatment of an eminent physician. The healing was accomplished through Christian Science. Since that time my experience as a student of this beautiful truth has been one of exaltation and progress out of a state of material thinking into the realm of spiritual discernment.

A healing for which I am truly grateful was that of a very painful and quite alarming condition which had existed for more than two years. Although I never had a diagnosis, I believe medical science would have termed it malignant. The practitioner who was helping me, early referred me to a paragraph on page 395 of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, which reads in part, "It is mental quackery to make disease a reality—to hold it as something seen and felt—and then to attempt its cure through Mind."

One day on leaving this practitioner's home, and while in a rather distressed and fearful attitude, I asked for continued help. He promptly but lovingly replied that he felt I did not need further treatment. This conviction was apparently just what was needed, for from that time there was gradual but definite improvement. Although it was some months before the condition entirely disappeared, the healing was complete and has been permanent during these several intervening years.

Another experience was that of the restoration of a lost article through the application of Christian Science. One evening while attending an outdoor picnic I discovered that a diamond dinner ring had slipped unnoticed from my finger sometime during the supper hour. It was at that season when the grass was laden with fallen autumn leaves, and there were large cracks in the ground due to a late summer drought. Thus circumstances for recovering the missing piece of jewelry were somewhat adverse. Nevertheless, I did what seemed humanly advisable in the way of searching for it. Afterwards I sought assistance from a practitioner, who assured me that God possesses all good and that I, as His perfect reflection, could not be deprived of anything which was needful or right for me to have. A few days later, soon after I had completely eliminated all fear and entirely released the outcome of the incident to the wisdom of divine Mind, I received a telephone call reporting that the ring had been found in a most unusual manner, one that it would seem only a power or intelligence above and beyond the human could effect.

Christian Science is efficacious in solving business problems also, as was proved to me in the consummation of a very desirable real-estate transaction. The possibility that this transaction would be made seemed extremely remote until the practitioner who was working for me avowed that in God's business what blesses one must bless all concerned. The awakening in my own consciousness to this truth resulted in a most harmonious transfer of considerable property.

The foregoing experiences prove that God is always everywhere, regardless of circumstance or condition. Mere spoken or written thanks are inadequate. My heart's desire is that my gratitude may be manifested in humility and in the putting of Christian Science to practical use in my daily affairs. I never knew how to pray aright until I became interested in this wonderful truth; and with each new day of progress there dawns a more enlightened concept of true prayer, namely, the persistent denial of evil and the affirmation of God's allness and goodness.—
